Update:
for anyone with the same dilemma, with a memory card that has crashed and is unreadable. I used PC Inspector smart recovery and GetDataBack for NTFS. Both are either free or have a free trial version. They even recovered files that were deleted off the memory card long ago. I also bought another USB card reader, though I'm not sure that it made a difference or not.
