Today is Dad's birthday and we are sad that he isn't here to spoil and love and hug, but we can still celebrate him.
The outpouring of love and respect seen over the past two months for Dad is nothing short of amazing. We all knew he was crazy smart and awesome - but what we are finding out is that everyone else knew it too.
Before Dad passed he was honored to ask to speak for the Living Library at the Defense Acquisitions University. The treatment was tough on Dad and he could get lost in thought or weakness, but when his mind kicked in - he was back to JerBeck. This was more than proven during his interview. They were hoping for an hour of Dad's time, but when Dad has an audience and something to say - look out. Dad spoke for Three Hours with only one page of notes as reference. The editing crew have their work cut out for them. Once fully edited, his voice (and Big Brain) will live on forever at the
AT&L Living Library But they were able to put together a 5 minute clip of Dad speaking and man did they capture him. His jesters, mannerisms, the way he would speak when he knew what he was saying was important and he wanted you to realize it too.
They played this clip at the PBL conference in South Carolina last month. Dad was an advocate for logistics and was instrumental in the establishment of the Secretary of Defense PBL award honoring excellence in logistics. Mom, Shell, Gerda and I were invited to attend the conference where Dad's commitment and passion for logistics will forever be honored as the BPL award has been renamed after him and will now be known as the Gerald R. Beck Memorial PBL Award. Mom, Randy Fowler, Vice Admiral Wally Massenburg, and Tony Stampone spoke about Dad and said the most amazing things that we will forever hold in our hearts.
We also received an email asking for a picture of Dad. A group of people who worked with Dad, and are affectionately known as Jerry's Kids, started a company and are naming a conference room after him.
They say it's a shame that all these forms of praise have to come after his passing, but I look at it differently - I think Dad was respected and admired over his many, many years as a Logistician, co-worker and friend and these tributes are a reflection of that and a way to help keep a part of him alive.
Dad loved what he did no matter what it was - raising a family, his work, his interests, his friends. He still teaches us valuable lessons every day on what is truly important.
We are lucky kids - not just for Dad who we miss, but also for our Mom. Mom's strength through everything is astounding. Some people could fall apart losing their best friend for over 42 years, and while there are no words for the sadness in her heart, Shell, Tim and I are proud of how she stands strong for us, for the grand kids and for herself.
Proud of Mom is exactly what we felt at the Award presentation when Mom spoke so beautifully about Dad. Following the slideshow of the ceremony is a copy of Mom's speech. It is as beautiful as she is.
Thank you for inviting us to share in honoring Jerry, I wish all of my family could be here as I know they are as proud of Jerry as we are. My other wish is that Jerry is watching all of this.
Jerry had many passions in life, his two greatest were his family and his work. As his family, we all knew how important and loved we were. He let us know every day. There was a sense of total acceptance and comfort when with him. He shared with us the joy he found through his work and how important it is to love what you do. Many of you know how much he loved what he did, and even retirement would not be able to keep him away.
He cared greatly and worked hard for the men and women in our armed forces. He truly believed they put themselves in harm’s way in our defense and for that, every effort should be made in keeping them as safe as possible.
Jerry took great pride and satisfaction in his part of the PBL Program. It was very important to him and he was very excited to be back with, in his words, "some of the finest and most professional people he ever had the privilege of working with".
Jerry had a way of making you feel like you were the most special person in the room, it is a feeling we will all miss. If Jerry is watching I know he is thinking, why all the fuss?, but I also know he would be very humbled and proud by this honor. And for Jerry we say THANK YOU!
